The fee is not the real question
Most committees start this debate at the wrong place. They compare Venmo's zero fee against a card processor's small percentage and stop there. But the fee is trivial compared to the cost that actually hurts: the hours you spend trying to figure out who paid. That is the number to optimize.
Venmo money lands in your personal balance as a stream of payments, many with a nickname you do not recognize, a note that says nothing, or no note at all. Now match 90 of those against your RSVP list by hand. That is the Venmo tax, and it does not show up on any fee schedule.
Venmo: where it fits and where it fails
Good for: a small class of twenty or thirty where you personally know every name that pops up, or collecting a quick informal deposit. Zero fees and everybody already has it.
Falls apart when: the class is large, guests bring plus-ones, or multiple committee members collect money into different accounts. The reconciliation is manual and error-prone, and there is no clean audit trail when someone swears they paid. It also blurs the line between the reunion's money and your personal account.
Card through your reunion page: the trade you want
Taking cards on a dedicated reunion page costs a small processing percentage, and in return every payment is stamped to the right person automatically. The benefits compound as your class grows:
- Auto-reconciliation. Each payment links to an RSVP, so your paid list updates itself, no spreadsheet cross-checking.
- One source of truth. All money flows to one place instead of three committee members' personal apps.
- A real record. Refunds, disputes, and who-paid-what are all documented, which matters when you are handling other people's money.
- Offer both if you want. You can still accept Venmo for stragglers, just centralize the record on your page so the master list stays accurate.
